Hope is an emotional state which promotes the belief in a positive outcome – especially when related to difficult events and circumstances in someone’s life. It is the feeling that, what is wanted, can be had . . or that events will turn out for the best.
In other words, with hope, someone can expect a positive outcome . . with confidence: They can look forward to (and face) the future – whatever is in store.
Hope is one of the three theological virtues in Christian tradition – being a combination of the desire for something, and the expectation of receiving it. Like all virtues, it arises from the will, not from the passions.
But, like love, hope must have courage to nourish it, and so it is a double-edged sword. Having said that, it is still true to say that, to be optimistic, one must have hope:
Hope is a lover’s staff; walk hence with that
And manage it against despairing thoughts
So, if you gift a friend a little piece of hope, you are willing them to achieve something with confidence and expectation . . something that is vital in goal achievement. And achieving complex and difficult goals requires focus, long-term diligence and effort. So, encourage a friend or partner with a little piece of hope: They will be more likely to succeed.
